Discount Lumber Love
At the beginning of the month, I made an unplanned trip back to my home town of Jackson, Mississippi, to be with a friend, who is much more like family, while we said goodbye to his saint of a mother. While it was an extremely sad time, it was also a joyful reunion and celebration of life. After the service, my mother and I made the two hour trip from Jackson back toward her home in Oxford. As we were driving, I found myself saying, “Let’s stop into the discount lumber to see if their Christmas ribbon is out yet” (a statement not uncommon to hear around those parts).
Without skipping a beat she simply responded, “Great idea.”
Now, the discount lumber, as I like to refer to it, is a discount building material store located off of Highway 6, right outside of Oxford and about fifteen minutes from Batesville. Women all over the state know they can find hidden treasures in this unassuming building. At first glance, it looks like your everyday, average hardware store. But when you turn the corner, to the right of the entrance, you find yourself inside an oasis of décor heaven, especially when Christmas starts knocking on fall’s door.
Any good southern woman knows how to find a bargain. I have plenty of memories as a child growing up in Mississippi of frequenting flea markets or the fire sale store off Highway 49 or near Magee to find the elusive deal or hidden gem. It is a skill that is taught at a young age. And while any good southern woman knows how to find a bargain, the best bargain there is to find is one that doesn’t look like one. Enter discount lumber.
As I visited the store, I noticed the front area filled with fall foliage, tasteful Halloween décor, a hodge- podge of velvet pumpkins, and white, stone- washed turkeys and pheasants perfect for a neutral fall tablescape. But I knew exactly where I was heading as I passed the October and November decorations. I made a beeline for the back room- the ribbon room.
In this ribbon room one can find aisles and aisles of the most beautiful ribbon you have ever seen. There are colors in every shade, textures of every type, and detail you cannot find anywhere else. I immediately was drawn to the soft velvet, pale turquoise ribbon with hand beaded inlay of pearl and gold. I had bought it before and loved everything about it. There were the traditional reds, the neutral whites and creams, and the old fashioned plaids. There was ribbon with delicately cut reindeer throughout, burlap and rustic binding, and beautiful gold and silver bows.
My personal favorites that day were the velvet ribbons, all widths and colors. I seem to always lean toward the shades of blue, go figure. I also love that throughout the store, you will find sporadic Christmas trees and tables decorated with said ribbon, so you can get ideas for your own home or see how it would look for yourself before purchasing. A kind of try before you buy if you will. Needless to say, the trip was a success, and I had officially planned my December décor in my mind. I actually returned this weekend to make my final purchases, as well as attend the football game. It’s one way to knock out two birds with one stone.
The discount lumber has much more than ribbon, though. Ornaments, nativity scenes, furniture, rugs, lamps, teacher’s gifts, and so much more can be found there. Trust me, this place is a gold mine for those looking to spruce up their home, especially during the holidays. And no one is paying me to write this…I just love the discount lumber so much, I had to share.
So, if you find yourself near Highway 6 between Oxford and Batesville, Mississippi, do yourself a favor and stop at the discount lumbar. You won’t be sad you did. And, if you have your husband or significant other with you, just send him over to the hardware section while you shop! It’s a win- win situation if you ask me. Starting October 31 through December 13, Inside Discount (or as I Iike to call it, Discount Lumber) will offer mini open houses with door prizes and additional hours on Sunday.
I don’t know about you, but I sure do love that in the South, right on the side of the highway, you can find the most beautiful ribbon at the Discount Lumber.
